A bird bath is a shallow water filled basin that is placed outdoors to allow birds to bath and drink. Birds tend to return to reliable sources of water, providing a bath in your yard or garden will guarantee you will see many birds. However, birds are only drawn to clean and fresh water so you must take proper care of your bath to attract birds of all sorts. Changing the water of your bath every day will help to avoid contamination and mosquitoes that are attracted to water sources in the heat of the summer. Not much water is needed to maintain a proper bath, actually two inches is the maximum depth the water should reach. Once wet birds feathers become heavier which makes it harder to fly, deeper water can result in hypothermia or even drowning. To provide more safety your bath should have some sort of pedestal near to it so birds only need to fly short distances away.
Another important thing to remember when you are placing your bird bath in your yard or garden, is that it should be placed in a safe and mellow environment. All birds, especially wild birds, are partial to noise and movement and are easily scared off. To attract the most birds you should place your bath in a location that is quite and where there is low interaction. Birds love open areas so they can be sure there are no places for a predator to hide. You should place your bath in an open area of your yard where birds will be safe and feel secure. Additionally if you have pets such as cats or dogs the bath should not be placed in an area where they have access too.
